It is not unusual for the first clue that people have of a Bed Bug infestation is when they notice bites or by finding the small blood smears of crushed bugs on their sheets.
So, What Are Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs are extremely small (1/4" or less). They are oval shaped flat bugs that are nocturnal and feast on the blood of their victims. Their color ranges from a light brown before eating to dark brown after they eat. The bugs inject a small amount of it's saliva as an anesthetic to make it's bite less noticeable. Then they suck blood from their victims.
Where They Hide
Because they are so small the bugs can easily hide from detection. Early in the morning, just before dawn, they venture out from their hiding places and feed. The bugs are so small they can hide in the seams of your mattress, folds in the bedding sheets, under and in headboards and other nearby furniture. They can sometimes even be found hiding behind pictures hung near your sleeping areas.
Their bite is nearly indistinguishable from the bites of other insects so nearly the only way that a Bed Bug infestation can be identified is by finding an actual bug, a blood smear caused by them getting crushed, fecal dropping on your sheets or discarded shells.
Why Should The BedBug Be Identified
These bugs are almost impossible to eliminate with the same methods used for other bugs.
